A large outer filter traps the large airborne particles, lint and pet hair. The pre-filter traps smaller particles that have passed through the outer filter. These initial layers add life to the carbon and HEPA layers. 15 lbs. of activated carbon adsorbs still smaller particulate as well as odors and gasses. Finally, True Medical HEPA filter paper removes harmful airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns.
