about-dustmites^^^
Dust mites are tiny bugs - not insects per se, but more closely related to spiders and ticks. They measure about 1/100th of an inch in length, which is smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. Due to their very small size, these dust mites are not visible to the naked eye. They live in bedding, couches, carpet, stuffed toys and old clothing. Dust mites feed on the dead skin that falls off the bodies of humans and animals and on other organic material found where they live.
Dust mites love warm, humid areas filled with dust. Bed pillows, mattresses, carpets and furniture are great places for them to live.
For most people, while they are disgusting, house dust mites are not actually harmful. However, the medical significance of house dust mites arises because their microscopic cast skins and feces are a major constituent of house dust that induces allergic reactions in some individuals.
For those individuals, inhaling the house dust allergen triggers rhinitis allergica or bronchial asthma. Symptoms are usually respiratory in nature (sneezing, itching, watery eyes, wheezing, etc.) but there are also reports of a red rash around the neck. Other allergic reactions may include headaches, fatigue and depression.
House dust contaminated with the fecal pellets and cast skins of dust mites is one of the most strongly allergenic materials found indoors. Estimates are that dust mites may be a factor in 50 to 80 percent of asthmatics, as well as in countless cases of eczema, hay fever and other allergic ailments.
House dust mite presence is often suspected before they are actually seen and accurately identified. Usually it happens when somebody in the household experiences any of the above symptoms.
The presence of house dust mites can be confirmed microscopically which requires collecting samples from mattresses, couches or carpets. Also, it requires the use of a microscope with sufficient magnification and the technical ability to recognize house dust mites under the microscope.
There are also diagnostic tests sold and distributed in the U.S. One must collect dust samples and mix a portion of the sample with reagents packed with the test. Then, a dipstick is placed into the mixture, and the color change then compared to a chart packed with the test.

Molds are simple, microscopic organisms, present virtually everywhere - indoors and outdoors. For molds to grow and reproduce, they need only a food source - any organic material, such as leaves, wood, paper, or dirt - and moisture. When excessive moisture or water accumulates indoors, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or un-addressed. To reproduce, molds release countless tiny spores, which waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on.
For those sensitive to molds, exposure to mold spores can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation, amongst other things. Some people, such as those with serious allergies to molds, may have more severe reactions, like fever and shortness of breath. Those with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs. Molds can also trigger asthma episodes, so people with asthma should avoid contact with or exposure to molds.
Also, because mold digests whatever it grows on, objects exposed to it - carpets, paintings or expensive furniture, just to name a few - can eventually get destroyed. A mold patch settled in the foundations of a building can gradually weaken them to the point when walls start cracking and crumbling apart.

More than 70% of U.S. households have a dog or cat. Pets provide companionship, security and a sense of comfort. However, people with allergies should be cautious in deciding what type of pet they can safely bring into their home.
For an estimated 10% of the entire population that can be allergic to animals, it is important to know what exactly causes their allergies, where these 'triggers' can be encountered, and what to do to minimize exposure.
Cat and dog dander, or skin flakes, as well as their saliva and urine, can cause an allergic reaction – sneezing, wheezing, and running eyes and nose. Both feathers and the droppings from birds, another common kind of pets, can increase the allergen exposure. Bird droppings can also be a source of bacteria, dust, fungi and mold. This also applies to the droppings of other caged pets, such as gerbils, hamsters and mice.
The animal hair is not considered to be a very significant allergen, however, the hair or fur can collect pollen, dust, mold, and other allergens. Although individual pets may produce more or less allergen, there is no relationship between the pet's hair length and allergen production. There is also no such thing as a non-allergenic breed.
Animal allergens are found mostly in homes where pets are present. What is surprising, however, is that these allergens are also found (in lesser amounts) in places where pets have never been present, such as schools, workplaces, and other public spaces. Since dander allergens are sticky, they can be brought to these places on the clothing of pet owners. Also, while dander on a smooth surface (such as a wall) can be easily wiped off, in soft materials, such as carpets, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and clothing, it can persist for long periods of time. That is why, unless special steps are taken, pet dander can remain in a home for up to six months after the pet has been removed.
An estimated 6 million Americans are allergic to cats and approximately one third of them have cats in their homes. Allergic reactions to cats can range from inflammation of the nose and eyes to asthma attacks. Although the most effective treatment is removal of the pet, recent scientific studies have shown that steps can be taken in homes with cats to significantly decrease one's exposure to cat allergen.
Cat allergen is not actually cat hair, but a protein present in the dander and saliva of cats. The allergens become airborne as microscopic particles which, when inhaled into the nose or lungs, can produce allergic symptoms. Cat allergen is particularly sticky and is carried on clothing.
In a household with a cat, it is almost impossible not to be exposed to some level of cat allergen, which may or may not be enough to trigger allergy symptoms. Of course, the levels of exposure will be much higher where cats are present, and these levels are more likely to cause an allergy attack.
Dog allergy is less common than cat allergy. And, contrary to popular belief, dog hair is not what makes you feel miserable - just like with cats, it is their dander that gets to you. For some allergy sufferers, a dog's lick may also set off an allergic response.
Because dogs tend to scratch themselves more than cats, dog allergen can be more easily introduced into the air. The reason for excessive scratching may be that the dog itself is allergic to something in your home. There are hundreds of possible causes of this, the most common is mold. It is worth mentioning that the same source may be worsening your own allergy symptoms, so taking care of it would make life easier for both you and your pet.
With rabbits, rats, mice, hamsters and guinea pigs the most important sources of allergens are the saliva and urine. Once dry, these secretions become airborne and can be a source of allergic reactions for children and laboratory animal workers. Horse and cow skin scales can be allergenic to those exposed to them. Birds carry allergy-provoking mites, molds and pollen on their feathers. Budgie droppings can release proteins into the air which induce insidious lung problems and asthma.
Tropical fish may be problematic, in that individuals can develop allergies to the ant's eggs upon with the fish feed, and mold that may grow in the fish tank. Even cockroaches, although not considered pets, are also a source of domestic allergens.
Before making your pet the scapegoat for a family member's allergy, make sure that it is truly so. The best way to tell if the allergy is indeed present is to remove the allergic person from the pet's environment for a week or two, and see if their allergies improve. You may also wish to consult your allergist.
If a pet allergy has been confirmed, the best method of controlling it is avoidance. Sometimes, the best solution may be to find the pet another home. However, you must remember that pet allergen may remain in your home for up to six months.
If the family is unwilling to remove the pet, you can follow these hints to reduce pet allergen exposure:

Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is perhaps the best-known allergy of all. Many people associate this type of allergy primarily with outdoor exposure to pollen. However, you may also experience significant levels of pollen at home, and these exposures can also trigger allergic rhinitis symptoms.
Most pollens are windborne; they can often blow indoors (typically through open windows and doors) and trigger allergic symptoms such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever) within your home, not just outdoors. Wind-pollinated trees, grasses, and weeds produce pollen during various times of the year.
The signs and symptoms of pollen allergy are familiar to many:
Free-floating pollen particles are easy to inhale, without even knowing it. In people who are not allergic to pollen, the mucus in the nasal passages simply moves these foreign particles to the throat, where they are swallowed or coughed out. But something different happens to a pollen-sensitive person.
As soon as the allergy-causing pollen lands on the mucous membranes of the nose, a chain reaction occurs that leads special cells in these tissues (called mast cells) to release histamine. This powerful chemical dilates the many small blood vessels in the nose. Fluids escape through these expanded vessel walls, which causes the nasal passages to swell and results in nasal congestion. Histamine can also cause itching, irritation, and excess mucus production.
Some people with pollen allergy can develop asthma, a serious respiratory condition. While asthma may recur each year during pollen season, it can eventually become chronic. The symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath due to a narrowing of the bronchial passages, and excess mucus production. Asthma can be disabling and can sometimes be fatal. If wheezing and shortness of breath accompany the hay fever symptoms, it is a signal that the bronchial tubes also have become involved, indicating the need for medical attention.

The chemical makeup of pollen is the basic factor that determines whether a particular type is likely to cause hay fever. For example, pine tree pollen is produced in large amounts by a common tree, which would make it a good candidate for causing an allergy. However, the chemical composition of pine pollen appears to make it less allergenic than other types.
Among North American plants, weeds are the most prolific producers of allergenic pollen. Ragweed is the major culprit, but others of importance are sagebrush, redroot pigweed, lamb's quarters, Russian thistle (tumbleweed), and English plantain. Grasses and trees, too, are important sources of allergenic pollens. Although there are more than 1,000 species of grass in North America, only a few produce highly allergenic pollen. These include timothy grass, Kentucky bluegrass, Johnson grass, Bermuda grass, redtop grass, orchard grass, and sweet vernal grass. Trees that produce allergenic pollen include oak, ash, elm, hickory, pecan, box elder, and mountain cedar.
One of the most obvious features of pollen allergy is its seasonal nature - people experience its symptoms only when the pollen grains to which they are allergic are in the air. Each plant has a pollinating period that is more or less the same from year to year. Exactly when a plant starts to pollinate seems to depend on the relative length of night and day - and therefore on geographical location - rather than on the weather. (On the other hand, weather conditions during pollination can affect the amount of pollen produced and distributed in a specific year.) Thus, the farther north you go, the later the pollinating period and the later the allergy season.
|
| A sample pollen count (click to enlarge) |
Pollen counts tend to be highest on warm, dry, breezy days and lowest during chilly, wet periods. Moreover, the pollen concentration in an area can be changed by population growth, land use, tree plantings and cutting, industrialization, and pollution.
People with a pollen allergy may at first suspect they have a summer cold - but the "cold" lingers on. For any respiratory illness that lasts longer than a week or two, it is important to see a doctor. When it appears that the symptoms are caused by an allergy, the patient should see a physician who understands the diagnosis and treatment of allergies. If the patient's medical history indicates that the symptoms recur at the same time each year, the physician will work under the hypothesis that a seasonal allergen like pollen is involved.
|
| A doctor is performing an allergy skin test |
To find out which types of pollen are responsible, skin testing may be recommended using pollens commonly found in the local area. A diluted extract of each kind of pollen is applied to a scratch or puncture made on the patient's arm or back or injected under the patient's skin. With a positive reaction, a small, raised, reddened area with a surrounding flush (called a wheal and flare) will appear at the test site. The size of the wheal can provide the physician with an important reaction diagnostic clue, but a positive reaction does not prove that a particular pollen is the cause of a patient's symptoms.
Skin testing is not advisable in some patients such as those with certain skin conditions. Diagnostic tests can be done using a blood sample from the patient to detect levels of IgE antibody to a particular allergen. One such blood test is called the RAST (radioallergosorbent test). Although the RAST offers some advantages over skin testing, it is expensive to perform, takes several weeks to yield results, and is somewhat less sensitive. Skin testing remains the most sensitive and least costly diagnostic tool.
There are three general approaches to the treatment of pollen allergy:
Although no cure for pollen allergy has yet been found, one of these strategies or a combination of them can provide various degrees of relief from allergy symptoms.
There are other ways to evade the offending pollen:
You can find more hints in the article on minimizing your exposure to pollen.
For people with seasonal allergies who find they cannot avoid pollen, the symptoms can often be controlled with medication available by prescription or over the counter:
If environmental control methods and medication prove to be inadequate to control a person's symptoms, a physician may recommend immunotherapy (commonly called allergy shots). The aim of this treatment is to increase the patient's tolerance to the particular pollen to which he or she is allergic.
Diluted extracts of the pollen are injected under the patient's skin. The patient receives small doses once or twice a week, working up to larger doses that are given less often. The size of the largest dose depends on the patient's tolerance and the treatment's effect on the patient's allergy symptoms. Since it takes time to build up tolerance, prolonged treatment may be needed before the patient's symptoms are relieved.
Immunotherapy is not without problems. It can be expensive, and may require months before improvement is apparent. Further, it does not work well for some people and, if the size of the dose or frequency of shots is not carefully monitored, the injections can cause allergic reactions. These reactions can be quite mild - redness and swelling at the site of the injection - or potentially serious systemic reactions such as hives, generalized swelling, or shock.
As anyone with allergies knows, allergic symptoms are annoying and, in severe cases, debilitating. As a rule, however, an allergy to pollen does not progress to serious pulmonary or other diseases. Occasionally, when pollen allergy is not treated, complications may occur. These include swelling of the nasal passages and eustachian tubes leading to the ears, which may prevent proper drainage and airflow and lead to secondary infection of the sinuses or to middle ear problems.

humidifiers^^Relative humidity under 30% can be very uncomfortable and may also lead to aggravation of asthma symptoms. Humidifiers can be used to solve this problem.
^ Below 30% relative humidity, people can be uncomfortable and can suffer from dry mucus membranes which can lead to nosebleeds and infections. Low humidity can also aggravate the symptoms of asthma.
Humidifiers can be used to make your home more comfortable during dry seasons, especially in winter, when the air is dried by the heating appliances. Monitor humidity levels by using a gauge in order to avoid over-humidification of your room.
For additional information on air humidifiers and tips on how to choose one, please visit our Air Humidifiers Information Page.

The AOS 1355 Air Washer washes and humidifies the air without the use of filters. Special humidifier discs turn constantly through water. This method removes many impurities (e.g. dust, pollen and particle-bound odors) from the air - as in Nature, where the rain washes the air clean. The Air Washer works on the self-regulating evaporation principle and thus it requires no additional control systems to ensure optimal air humidity. The AOS 1355 is equipped with a special anti-bacterial protection system. By drawing the air through water, the Air Washer naturally cleanses the air of smallest air borne particles, just like outside air is washed by rain. The air is humidified by special humidifying disks which render traditional replacement filters unnecessary. The self-regulating principal of evaporation guarantees an optimal level of humidity without additional control systems.

Facing the swine flu virus threat which is transmitted as a regular flu, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you that Airfree destroys any kind of airborne viruses, including influenza responsible for the swine flu.
Airfree's internal TSS sterilizing chamber operates at temperatures of 400° F, which equals more than a triple of the required temperature to destroy ANY virus.
Airfree is not a guarantee that no one will be contaminated by the virus but surely is a priceless help in constantly destroying airborne viruses and other germs in closed environments.
Please see what the CDC (USA Central Disease Control) says about the swine flu (ww.cdc.gov):
How does swine flu spread?
Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
How can someone with the flu infect someone else?
Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

Airfree Enviro RL 60 is the system for people living with asthma, allergies, other respiratory conditions, or for anyone who wants cleaner, more breathable air. It destroys airborne organic allergens, molds, viruses and other microorganisms. For an example of how Airfree protects your air, see the amazing Strawberry Test!
The new Airfree technology is much simpler than everything else seen in the Air Purifiers segment: Airfree uses just heat to sterilize indoor air.
Inside Airfree's patented ceramic core 99.99% of all microorganims (spores, fungus, bacteria, virus, mold, dust mites feces and skeleton) are burned at temperatures around 400ºF (250ºC). This is done without significant heat contribution to the ambient. 2 Airfrees in the same room contribute as much heat as one adult person. No living microorganism survives this power. See Airfree at work!
Airfree reduces Ozone whereas most ionizers, ozone generators and air purifiers generate such harmful gas that destroys lung tissue and triggers respiratory allergies.
Controlling airborne allergens at work and at home makes a significant contribution towards reducing overall exposure to airborne allergens. This is why every successful allergen avoidance program should include an Airfree device as part of an overall allergen avoidance strategy.
Airfree RL60 is also confirmed to be able to reduce dust mite allergen Der p 1 by an average of 70%!

Tobacco smoke consists of tars, water vapor, carbon dioxide, nicotine and over 400 other chemicals. It accumulates on drapes, furniture, clothing, walls and other surfaces, and continues to release tar vapors and odors long after active smoking has stopped. Most air purifiers are not equipped to handle tar, which can clog a normal HEPA filter. Even electrostatic devices quickly become saturated by the particles of cigarette smoke, requiring frequent (and expensive) filter changes. And most air purifiers only capture the particles from cigarette smoke - they do nothing about the harmful chemicals.
Chemicals have replaced bacteria and viruses as the main threat to human health in western industrial nations. While our bodies have some natural defenses against particles, they have absolutely none against airborne chemicals and gases. Most domestic air purifiers on the market focus on protecting you against particles. They only have a few grams of carbon sprayed on a mesh. That's enough to capture some odors, but not enough to clean the air.
AllerAir air purifiers use the largest activated carbon filters in the industry to give the most protection from chemicals and odors. Particles like dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and even viruses are all removed indiscriminately by a HEPA air filter. Other options are available to help you get your air even cleaner, such as a UV light and specialized blends of carbon.

AllerAir's smallest personal air purifier for localized chemical, odor, and particle removal. It is a full-featured air purifier that is small enough to use in your car, and at 14 lbs. it is light enough for you to take with you while traveling.
While there are many companies manufacturing air purifiers, only a small number include carbon filtration in their repertory. Even AllerAir’s basic dual-purpose units can provide more carbon filtration capacity and adsorption then they can. Anyone truly concerned about removing chemicals and odors from the air must choose an air purifier with many pounds of activated granular carbon with deep carbon beds. While other manufactures cryptically hide how much carbon they use (or what sort of filtration they use all together), AllerAir proudly displays how much carbon they use in their units. At the end of the day, having more carbon media is crucial in helping filter chemical contaminants and unpleasant odors from the air.
AllerAir offers a wide range of air purification systems suitable for general to very specific business applications. They offer complete air cleaning technology using advanced HEPA filtration and large quantities of specially blended carbon to neutralize airborne particles, chemicals, noxious gases and undesirable odors. AllerAir guarantees that their units will provide you with more filtration and more features at an unbeatable value. If you would like to order an option that you do not see here, or you are not sure which unit is right for you, simply contact us and we will help you.
Chemicals are a part of daily living: they are in our furniture, our cleaners, and the air we breathe. Chemicals have replaced bacteria and viruses as the main threat to our health. While our bodies have some natural defenses against particles, they are not well equipped to deal with airborne chemicals and gases. In order to capture dangerous chemicals, such as Formaldehyde and Benzene (which are both carcinogens), air purifiers need to use activated carbon, the same material used in military gas masks to protect against chemical attacks.
Most domestic air purifiers on the market focus on protecting you against particles. HEPA air filters protect against 99.97% of airborne particles sized 0.3 microns, but 0% of airborne chemicals. While a few air purifiers on the market have a nominal amount of carbon (enough to remove some odors), AllerAir air purifiers use the largest activated carbon filters in the industry to give the most protection from chemical contaminants, noxious gases and unpleasant odors.
Each AllerAir air purifier can be customized to fit your needs. Each unit comes in a variety of colors, and with several options. If you would like to order an option that you do not see here, or you are not sure which unit is right for you, simply contact us and we will help you.

Spring Allergies and How to Avoid ThemWhat better way is there, than to spend a beautiful spring day enjoying the weather. For most people it is a pleasure, however for allergy sufferers, it can be very hard to enjoy themselves. But, if the right precautions are taken, there is no reason why even the worst allergy sufferer has to miss out on outdoor fun. Pollen
This is one of the most common causes for spring allergies. The average pollen particle is less than the width of an average human hair. Many trees, grasses and low-growing weeds have small, light, dry pollen that usually trigger allergy symptoms. Plants usually emmit pollen starting from early spring and ending in late summer. In warmer climates this may start as early as February and end as late as November. In cooler areas, the allergy season may last only from March to June. The exact period of the allergy season in your area also depends on which plants are prevalent there, since different plants pollinate at different times. Mold
Mold spores float in the air like pollen, and are present throughout the year. Unlike pollen, mold does not have a specific season, but is affected by weather conditions such as wind, rain, humidity or temperature. Outdoor mold spores begin to appear after the melting of the snow in spring, and reach their peak in July in warmer states and October in colder states. Mold can be present almost anywhere, including your home - in attics, basements, bathrooms, refrigerators and other food storage areas, garbage containers, carpets and upholstery. Effects of Weather and Location Allergy symptoms are often minimal on days that are rainy, cloudy or windless, because pollen does not move about during these conditions. Hot, dry and windy weather signals greater pollen and mold distribution and thus, increased allergy symptoms. If you are allergic to plants in your area, you may believe that moving to another area of the country with different plants will help. However, within a year or two you may find that you have acquired allergies to new plants prevalent in the area. Therefore, moving to another part of the country to escape allergies is often ultimately disappointing (not to mention - very expensive!), and is not recommended. Appropriate treatment is the best method for coping with your allergies. See your allergist or immunologist, who will take a thorough history and conduct tests to determine exactly which pollens or molds are triggering your symptoms. He or she will help you determine when these airborne allergens are most prevalent in your area and the best way to cope with them. To find an allergist near you, you can use our Allergy Doctors Directory. Keeping Safe During the Allergy Season - Do's and Don'ts

Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body. The body cannot work without it, just as a car cannot run without gas and oil. In fact, all the cell and organ functions in a human body depend on water for their functioning. For example, the human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and lungs 90%. Considering that water plays such a major role in the function of our body‚ it is not surprising that its purity is the most basic and essential key to our health. But, with global pollution on the rise, are you sure that the water that you and your family drink is absolutely clean? Water PollutionThere are many causes for water pollution, including outfalls from factories, refineries, waste treatment plants, etc. that emit fluids of varying quality directly into urban water supplies. Soils and groundwaters may contain the residue of human agricultural practices (fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) and improperly disposed of industrial wastes. Atmospheric contaminants (such as gaseous emissions from automobiles, factories and even bakeries) also eventually make their way into the water supplies. In the United States and other countries, these practices are regulated, although this doesn't mean that pollutants can't be found in the water. Water pollutants can be broadly classified into three categories:
Water Treatment MethodsWhile it is your water company's responsibility to provide biologically and chemically safe water, this is unfortunately not always the case. If you are using public water, you might experience unacceptable levels of some of the contaminants listed above. To make sure that the water you drink is absolutely safe, you may choose to use one of the following treatment methods:
A good water treatment system would consist of a sediment prefilter that would remove larger particles and clorine, an RO membrane and an activated carbon postfilter that would remove the last of the impurities and odors. Some models also include an UV treatment chamber to further improve the purification quality. If you notice an unusual odor or taste in your water or experience any intestinal symptoms, this may indicate that your water is contaminated. To get more information on the condition of your water system, you can call your water supplier and ask for the yearly test results on their drinking water supply, visit the EPA website, or purchase a test kit which would help you find out if there are any contaminants in your water. If you would like more information on the ways you can make the water in your home absolutely safe, you can call one of our Water Quality Experts toll-free at 1-866-234-6630, 10 am - 6 pm ECT. We would be more than happy to help you with any questions you may have. |

| Environmental Wellness During Winter Winter and the heating season are here, and it is very important to know how to maintain health and wellness in the house & workplace. If you are tired of putting a bucket of water under the bed or a pot with water on the stove to remove dryness out of the air, this may be a good reason to consider a humidifier. When dry air is drawn inside your home by your heating system, it acts like a sponge, seeking out and absorbing moisture wherever it can find it. Cold, dry air will dehydrate you and your family, drying up delicate body tissues such as your skin, eyes, throat and nasal passages. Symptoms caused by dry air can be dry nose and throat to more frequent colds, making it worse for asthma and allergy sufferers. Even your home is dramatically affected by the cold and dry air, which is known as the "Dry-Home Syndrome", causing wall paneling, wood trim and hardwood flooring to shrink. Also, joints in wood furniture sometimes become loose. Winter Dry Skin Asthma Sufferers - Surviving Winter | At Allergy Be Gone we strive to help people attack their allergic symptoms. Dear Valued Customer,Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body. Water Pollution
Did you know that each year various industries release approximately 200 million pounds of toxic chemicals into the waterways? With this number in mind, it is no wonder that a recent report by the EPA stated that over 40% of US lakes and rivers are polluted.
Of course, the water that runs from your tap is treated to remove the majority of these pollutants. But this doesn't mean that it's absolutely pure and safe for drinking. Some pollutants are capable of "slipping" through the filters or can get into your water as it travels through the pipes to your home. Such pollutants can be broadly classified into three categories:
Identifying Polluted Water
If you experience any of these symptoms, your water may require additional treatment before use: To get more information on the condition of your water system, you can call your water supplier and ask for the yearly test results on their drinking water supply, consult the EPA's Drinking Water Database, or purchase a test kit which would help you find out if there are any contaminants in your water. Water Treatment MethodsYour water company is responsible to provide water that is safe to use, though unfortunately this is not always the case. To make sure that the water you drink is absolutely safe, you may choose to use one of the following treatment methods:
A good household water treatment system would consist of a sediment prefilter that would remove larger particles and clorine, an RO membrane for second-stage filtration, and an activated carbon postfilter that would remove the last of the impurities and odors. Some models also include an UV treatment chamber to further improve the purification quality. Heat Wave Danger
Besides the discomfort already imposed by the hot weather, heat waves can increase the levels of air pollution (which are already high in metropolitan areas), creating an extremely hazardous environment. Individuals with chronic heart and respiratory diseases are the ones who are influenced by such conditions the most - they may find that their symptoms are greatly aggravated by the hot weather. Health Effects of a Heat WaveUnder normal conditions, the body's internal thermostat produces perspiration that evaporates and cools the body. If the weather is extremely hot and humid, this ability can be pushed its limits. Elderly people, young children, and those who are sick or overweight are more likely to become victims of extreme heat. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that excessive heat claims more lives in the United States each year than hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. Between 1979-1998, the CDC estimates that 7,421 deaths resulted from exposure to excessive heat in the U.S. In 1995, an episode of unusually hot weather in Chicago resulted in the deaths of over 700 people. Everyone is exposed to some mold on a daily basis without evident harm. It is common to find mold spores in the air inside homes, and most of the airborne spores found indoors come from outdoor sources. Most people are unharmed by such encounters with mold. But sometimes, mold can cause damage, both to your health and your finances. Introduction to mold
How does mold affect people? How can I tell if my house has mold?

Mold Problems and Ways to Fix ThemSummer's warm and humid weather creates perfect conditions for mold - one of the most commonly encountered allergens - to develop.
Molds are simple, microscopic organisms, present virtually everywhere - indoors and outdoors. For molds to grow and reproduce, they need only a food source - any organic material, such as leaves, wood, paper, or dirt - and moisture. To reproduce, molds release countless tiny spores, which waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. These spores are what causes mold allergies and asthmatic attacks, since they are tiny enough to get inside your airial pathways and lungs, causing irritation. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on. When excessive moisture or water accumulates indoors, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or un-addressed. How does mold affect people? For those sensitive to mold, exposure to mold spores can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation, amongst other things. Some people, such as those with serious allergies to mold, may have more severe reactions, like fever and shortness of breath. Those with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs. Mold spores can also trigger asthma episodes, so people with asthma should avoid contact with or exposure to molds. Also, because mold digests whatever it grows on, objects exposed to it - carpets, paintings or expensive furniture, just to name a few - can eventually get destroyed. A mold patch settled in the foundations of a building can gradually weaken them to the point when walls start cracking and crumbling apart. How to tell if a house is mold-infested?
You may suspect that you have mold if you see discolored patches or cottony or speckled growth on walls or furniture or if you smell an earthy or musty odor. You also may suspect mold contamination if mold-allergic individuals experience some of the symptoms listed above when in the house. Evidence of past or ongoing water damage should also trigger more thorough inspection. Humidity in Your Home A common summer complaint is: It's not the heat, it's the humidity. Too much moisture in the hot summer air can literally turn the area you live in into a steam bath. Respiratory problems, insomnia and fungal skin infections are just a part of health problems that can be caused by excess humidity.Another problem associated with high humidity is mold. While being unpleasant to look at, mold patches can also pose a serious threat to your health, especially if you have allergies or asthma. Mold spores become dormant or die when the relative humidity is low. Dust mites (another common cause for allergies and asthma) also die when the humidity stays below 50%. How can I control the humidity? While you cannot affect the humidity outdoors, you can control it within your home. Here's some advice on how to do this:
How does a dehumidifier work?A dehumidifier extracts moisture from the air using a refrigeration system. The water that is removed from the air is collected in a tank. In some models the water can then be removed through a hose connected to the water drain in the kitchen or bathroom. Usually the water is drained downwards under its own weight (meaning that the dehumidifier must be located higher than where the water is drained to), but some models (like the DeLongi DE500P) include a pump system so that the water can be drained upwards. Most dehumidifiers work approximately within 64° - 90° F temperature limit and 40% - 95% relative humidity limit. Some function under temperatures as low as 44° F, which makes them perfect for basement use. Some of the DeLonghi models that we have in stock (ex. DeLonghi DE400) include this feature. Dehumidifiers are rated by the maximum amount of humidity that they will remove from the air in a 24 hour period. For example, a 40 pint dehumidifier is rated to remove 40 pints of moisture from the air in 24 hours. How to choose a dehumidifier? There are two general rules for this:
Also, if you are planning to use your dehumidifier in a basement, consider a pump model over a non-pump one. While a pump model may be more expensive, it is capable of emptying its tank by itself, saving you the trouble of running up and down the stairs carrying heavy tanks full of water and assures you the piece of mind while you're away from home. Please note that this table is only a rough estimate. If you have any doubts about which dehumidifier to choose, you can contact us toll-free at 1-866-234-6630, and our experts will help you figure it out. |

You can use the chart below as a quick reference. First, find the area you need to dehumidify in the top row. Next, find the relative humidity of the area in the leftmost column. The approximate dehumidifier capacity that you need would be in the cell on the intersection of the row and the column where your data is in.
*A non-electric dehumidifier can be used if the room size is especially small. If you are planning to use your dehumidifier in a basement, consider a pump model over a non-pump one. While a pump model may be more expensive, it is capable of emptying its tank by itself, saving you the trouble of running up and down the stairs carrying heavy tanks full of water and assures you the piece of mind while you're away from home. | Winter Humidity Problems And How To Solve Them Dear Valued Customer,A common problem with the coming of the cold season is the lack of humidity in the air. One of the main reasons for this is that heating systems in your home reduce your household humidity to under 35% which is below comfort level (40% - 50%).
Not only does low humidity affect your health, it can also damage your possessions. Hardwood floors, wooden furniture and expensive musical instruments lose moisture and contract when the air in a home is extremely dry. This can cause them to develop cracks or for the floor to separate at the seams. How can I increase the humidity inside my home? While there are many possible solutions to a low humidity problem, like using sprayers or boiling water on a stove, the most effective and convenient one is to use a humidifier - an appliance that adds moisture to the air.
How do I choose a humidifier? That mostly depents on how large a room you wish to humidify. Every humidifier has its capacity listed in gallons - that shows how many gallons of water in releases into the air within 24 hours. As a rule of a thumb, you can use the following table:
This table assumes that the air condition in your home are average. For extremely dry air, you should choose a humidifier with a rating at least one category higher than the one dictated by your room size. Most humidifiers are designed to humidify the air within a single room, and you might need one for each room where you spend your time the most - if you do not want to carry the humidifier from room to room. Larger, less portable models are available, which can cover a whole apartment or a floor. Or, for a more comprehensive solution, a Whole House Humidifier can be installed, adding moisture directly to the air coming from a furnace or a whole house A/C system. Another issue is choosing between a warm mist and a cool mist humidifier, and that depends mostly on your personal preferences. Cool mist is easier to breathe than warm mist, but warm mist is more useful when treating colds and other respiratory illness and takes on a second task as a vaporizer. What are the most common problems associated with humidifiers? The most common problem is the noise. This may range from slight buzz to the sound of boiling water in case of a warm mist humidifier. Ultrasonic humidifiers are the most quiet of all. Another problem is the "white dust". Tap water usually contains a certain amount of minerals, which settle down on walls and furniture when the water vapors are released into the air from a humidifier. Or, they can settle down inside the humidifier tank, creating scale buildup. This problem is usually solved by adding special chemicals to the water inside the humidifier tank. Such chemicals may come in a form of liquid, pads or cartridges. Using distilled water in a humidifier should also do the trick. Sometimes, when an unused humidifier is left filled with water for too long, microorganisms start growing within its tank, producing a stale odor. When a humidifier is turned on, the microorganisms from the tank will get into the air you breathe. Good practice is to always empty the humidifier tank when not in use and wipe it dry. Bacteriostatic chemicals that prevent microorganism growth are also available - some manufacturers even pre-treat the wicks in the evaporative humidifiers with them. Slant/Fin even uses a patented germ-killing ultraviolet light in its humidifier design. Taking care of your humidifier

| Keep Yourself Warm And Healthy This Winter Dear Valued Customer, The summer is long over, and, while in some parts of the country, the weather is still warm and comfortable, elsewheres it already feels like the winter is upon us. As the nights grow longer, you might start thinking about keeping warm during your rest instead of about getting rid of excess heat (like you might have a month ago). Luckily, here at Allergy Be Gone we have a line of products that will help you with just that - luxury comforters, pillows and fleece blankets that will also protect you from allergies during the night. Primaloft Comforters While you might consider purchasing a cheaper generic comforter available from any large department store, there is a great difference between those and a luxury Primaloft comforter. Generic comforters use cheap synthetic materials, which are heavy and less breathable. These comforters also tend to absorb moisture from your body, which leads to them losing most of the fluffyness they had after just a couple of months of use. On the other hand, Primaloft comforters are made with patented ultra-fine fibers, which create an incredibly lightweight, soft and comfortable insulation matched only by the best of down and feather. These fibers also whisk away moisture, making your sleep even more comfortable and leaving your comforter puffy much longer. Of course, there is always an option for buying a down comforter. But what if you are one of those allergic to down? Primaloft is your best answer! Because of its hypoallergenic qualities, a Primaloft comforter can provide an allergy-sensitive sleeper with a peaceful night's rest. And, Primaloft comforters are more durable that down comforters, which tend to lose the feathers inside them. Primaloft comforters are also machine washable and dryable. While other down alternative comforters become lumpy and flat after washing, Primaloft comforters remain consistently smooth and lofty. Pristine Polyester Fiberfill Pillows If you are allergic to dust mites, you might find the Pristine pillows an excellent choice for your bed. The covers of these pillows are made of unique Pristine fabric, which blocks dust mite allergens from leaving the pillow. The pillows themselves are made of synthetic fiber that feels just like down, but, unlike down, it can be easily machine washed. And, combined with a Pristine Pillow Cover, you may rest assured that no allergens coming from your pillow will ever disturb your sleep again. Primaloft Pillows What is said about the Primaloft comforters, also applies to Primaloft pillows. The same luxury material makes them extremely comfortable, durable and hypoallergenic. Pristine Pillow Covers can also be used with Primaloft pillows, giving you the same level of allergy protection as Pristine pillows do - together with Primaloft's luxury comfort and durability! Snuggable Fleece Blankets Made of highest quality polar fleece, these high-quality blankets remain a family favorite. Warmer than wool, yet with the cuddly softness and light weight of fleece, these blankets feel luxuriously cozy. Generously cut, and able to withstand repeated washings (unlike the regular fleece blankets), Snuggable blankets and lapthrows will keep you warm for years and years to come. And, unlike most wool or fleece blankets, Snuggable blankets do not bother allergic sleepers! |

It is an undisputed fact that roadways are one of the major sources of air pollution. While driving, you are forced to breathe air tainted with exhaust fumes, dust and soot particles, many of which may harm your health. Studies have shown that inside your car you are exposed to a significantly higher (up to six times!) concentration of polluted air than outside. Therefore, it is essential to keep these pollutants outside your vehicle. Why waste your time (up to several hours) and money (between $125 - 200) for a mechanic, when you can replace the cabin air filter in your car YOURSELF in less than 10 minutes, and for less than $50?
What is a car cabin air filter? You may not realize that such a part exists in your car. But, no matter if you know it or not, a cabin air filter is an essential part of your car's ventilation system that removes pollutants from the air before they get inside the passenger compartment. Why and how often should you change the cabin air filter?Eventually, a cabin air filter starts to lose its effectiveness, as it gets dirty with use. This may result in unpleasant odor, and decreased heating and air conditioning performance caused by restricted airflow through the filter. Sometimes, the collected dust in the filter may get dislodged and enter the passenger compartment, making the air inside your car even worse. Thus, it is recommended to replace the cabin air filter at least once a year or every 12,000 to 15,000 miles - more often if your vehicle is operated primarily in areas of heavy pollution or dusty conditions. Sometimes, when you start your car, an unpleasant smell appears, for no apparent reason. This is because your cabin air filter is outgasing, a common occurence for a filter that needs replacement. If you ever notice a musty smell in your vehicle, then you most likely need to change your cabin air filter. Are cabin air filters difficult to replace?Cabin air filters are typically located under a vehicle's dashboard or attached to the glove box. Others may be located in the engine compartment. In nearly all cases, cabin air filters can be changed in less than 10 minutes. To assist you with this, our website provides installation instructions for every cabin air filter that we have. |

Dear Valued Customer,A few days ago, you, together with the rest of the New York's residents, might have received a brochure from the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, labeled "Important Information About Your Drinking Water System". As a company dedicated to heightening our customers' awareness of health information, we would like to ask you to spare us a moment of your time so our Water Quality Experts could comment on the information contained within this brochure. Why did you receive this brochure? As stated in the brochure, since November 29th, 2004 there have been periods when a back-up chlorine feed line in the Catskill Water Supply System (which services New York City) was not operating optimally or was inoperable. As per the Code of Federal Regulation, this is classified as a treatment technique violation, which requires a public notice. What does all of this mean? The first treatment stage that drinking water undergoes before reaching your tap, is a process called chlorination. During it, the water is treated with chlorine, which kills disease-causing bacteria, viruses and other parasitic microorganisms. The purpose of the back-up feed line is to ensure that this process is not interrupted if something happens to the primary line. In case of a malfunction on the primary line, the back-up line can continue the chlorine treatment until the primary line is repaired. If the back-up line had been needed during the period it was inoperable, inadequately treated water could have entered the distribution system. What are the dangers of inadequately treated drinking water? As mentioned before, untreated drinking water may contain disease-causing microorganisms. Many of them can cause gastrointestinal illness of various degrees. Common symptoms of such illness may include nausea and vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches. Was the drinking water treated adequately during all of this period?Fortunately, yes. The drinking water quality was thoroughly monitored throughout all of the said period, and it was found to be safe for drinking, meeting all the disinfection requirements. The monitoring also showed that the malfunction in the back-up chlorine feed line did not result in the increase of the numbers of microorganisms in the drinking water. While the failure in the back-up chlorine feed line was a technical violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act, it was not an emergency situation. No action is required on your part, and you can continue using your drinking water as usual. What is being done about this?As of April 2005, the DEP has already successfully repaired and replaced the damaged parts of the chlorine feed lines. However, it was found that the chlorine feed system needs to be completely replaced. This work is expected to be completed by December 1st, 2005. Where can I get more information?By phone: Online: At Allergy Be Gone: |

Vinyl encasings
These are the oldest type, the easiest to understand, and are probably the first thing that come to mind when most people think of an encasing. They are inexpensive, and effective, yet uncomfortable - stiff, noisy and sweaty. As a result, many individuals remove them after a day or two. They are suitable, however, as an economical cover for a box spring. On a box spring one is not sleeping on the plastic directly, so comfort is not an issue. It is for this purpose that we offer the line of Vinyl boxspring encasings.
The first problem with laminates is that, although less rigid than vinyl, they do have some stiffness to them. This is especially noticeable on the pillow. Second, they are not only allergen-proof - they are airtight. Although some laminates have been advertised as being "breathable", this refers only to the fact that in some of the better quality laminates a minute amount of water vapor can pass through the membrane. Although this represents an advance over vinyl, the fact is that no laminate is truly breathable; that is, none of them allow the passage of air. Once an encasing of this type is zipped closed around a pillow, the pillow becomes like a balloon, with air trapped in the encasing. And if you force the air out by pressing on the pillow, the air - and probably dust along with it - escapes through the zipper. The third and perhaps biggest problem with laminate encasings is that they often de-laminate, that is, with repeated washing and drying the urethane membrane separates from the fabric onto which it had been coated, making the encasing unusable. However, being that these encasings are priced for budget minded consumers, we carry the Economy Lite laminate encasing line. The problem is that not all microfibers are created equal. In fact, most of the so-called microfiber encasings on the market are not true microfibers at all, according to textile industry standards. Microscope photos taken at 40 power magnification reveal that many of the competitive products are much less tightly woven than ours. The areas of light coming through the fabric indicate pores. In many cases these pores are more than large enough to allow the passage of allergens. (Note: An interesting way of demonstrating the extraordinary tightness of our products is to simply put a few drops of water on it and see what happens.) Studies done at the Asthma & Allergic Diseases Center in Charlottesville, Virginia have shown that a microfiber fabric must have a pore size of between 2 to 6 microns to block all allergen. Our Pristine Basic barrier fabric has an average pore size of 6 microns. Many encasings on the market have pore sizes of 10 microns or more. Unlike many competitive encasings, ACB barrier fabric blocks all allergens, not only mite allergens but also the smaller animal dander allergens. This is important when a patient removes a pet from the bedroom, and the encasing must prevent the escape of previously accumulated allergen from the mattress. Yet this super tight fabric is the most comfortable on the market, literally as soft as silk. We offer two lines of microfiber encasings: Not all encasings are equal! It is, of course, up to the individual to decide what they want to buy and what you are willing to spend. But if the above differences are understood, one will be in a position to make an informed decision. Laminates were the next generation of encasings. These are still widely used, and are the type generally available at places like Bed, Bath and Beyond or Wal-Mart's, as well as from many allergy supply companies. When these were first developed, they represented a great advance over vinyl. They are made by laminating (fusing) a plastic-type membrane, now usually a polyurethane, to a fabric. The membrane side is against the pillow or mattress, and the fabric side is exposed, beneath the bed linens. The person is therefore not sleeping on the plastic directly, and these are therefore more comfortable than vinyl. Laminates have several problems, however, that have made them somewhat out of date. Microfiber encasings
Microfiber wovens are the newest type of allergen-barrier encasing. They are constructed from microfiber fabrics: new high-tech fabrics made of fibers so thin and yarns so tightly woven that there is no space between the weave of the yarns large enough to allow the passage of allergen molecules. Since the microfiber fabric is itself acting as a filter that prevents allergen escape,
encasings made from a true microfiber do not need the urethane membrane. Without the membrane they are truly breathable, that is, both air and water vapor can pass freely through the fabric, even though allergen cannot. They are therefore extremely comfortable, actually imperceptible in use. This is the state-of-the-art in allergen-proof encasings.
Our Pristine® Basic line offers an economical way to provide microfiber-grade protection together with a comfortable environment.
Our Pristine® Complete line is made of the highest standard woven microfiber. It has a smoother texture and a smaller pore size than Pristine® Basic, offers the best possible protection and the ultimate in comfort.
And it costs not much more than laminate encasings! Prices for our encasings:
Our encasings are the most effective, the most comfortable, and the most fairly priced.
Non-woven encasings
One last type of encasing fabric, the "non-woven", must be mentioned to make the story complete. An older example of a non-woven fabric is felt. This is made by gluing short pieces of yarn to each other to form a mass. This is in contrast to a woven fabric where the long warp and weft yarns are alternately woven above and below each other on a loom. Newer non-woven microfiber fabrics are effective and inexpensive allergen barriers, but they are not made to withstand machine washing, and they do not have the strength or durability of woven microfiber encasings.

Washing Instructions for Pristine Fabric:
May be washed in hot water (up to 160 degrees Fahrenheit) in the washing machine without any reduction in comfort or effectiveness. Do not use bleach.
The Pristine covers may then be dried in the dryer on the Permanent Press setting (not the highest heat).
The covers only need to be washed once or twice a year, but could be washed more frequently if needed. Normally, more frequent washings are not needed.

People with asthma suffer from a condition that makes it hard for them to breathe. Asthma differs from emphysema in that asthma is described as a reversible obstruction, that is a temporary blockage of the bronchial airways. The obstruction is caused by constriction of the muscles that surround the airways, inflammation and swelling of the airways lining, and an increase in the mucus production which blocks the passage of air.
An asthmatic individual does not have a problem breathing in (inhalation) but a difficulty in breathing out (exhalation). During inhalation, the airway opens up with the lowering of the diaphragm and the ribs moving out making the lungs bigger. The air can then move around an obstruction. In exhalation, the relaxation of the ribs and the movement of the diaphragm sliding up, prevents the air from getting around the obstruction.
Allergy is the primary cause of asthma. Chronic exposure to dust mite allergen can cause rhinitis, eczema and the bronchial hyper-reactivity characteristic of asthma. Clinical studies have further demonstrated that in both childhood and adult asthmatics, avoidance measures resulted in decreased asthmatic symptoms and a reduction in medication requirements.
Asthma is a chronic disease and its treatment requires four components: patient education, environmental control, comprehensive pharmacologic therapy, and objective measures to assess severity and monitor course of therapy.

![]() | The filters that Austin uses are what makes Austin Air cleaners the best in the world. Some other cleaners employ granulated carbon to absorb noxious odors and chemicals. But only Austin Air's HealthMate and HealthMate+ offer this added protection. This inch-thick barrier of carbon & zeolite mix acts like a sponge, scrubbing these hazardous gases from the air, before they reach the HEPA paper. No other air cleaner has it; nothing less will do when it comes to your health.
